The Beware Of Electric Shock (Photo Luminescent ) safety sign (F33) is a photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark) hazard warning sign used to alert people to the risk of electric shock where hazardous electrical equipment or live conductors may be present. Photoluminescent visibility supports safer behaviour during low light and power failure conditions.
Purpose and function
This sign alerts people to electrical hazard risk so they can take precautions before entering the area or interacting with equipment. It should be paired with site controls such as isolation procedures, barriers, and appropriate PPE where required.
Typical applications
- Electrical rooms, substations, distribution boards, and plant areas
- Machinery areas with exposed live components or electrical hazard points
- Maintenance zones where isolation is required before work begins
- Sites where emergency lighting failure would increase risk
Selection and placement guidance
Position signs within the normal line of sight and at key decision points. For directional signs, maintain continuity along the route so each sign confirms the next action. Selection should consider the environment, viewing distance, and the role the sign plays within your broader emergency and safety system.
Visibility and photoluminescent performance
Photoluminescent signs absorb ambient light and then emit visible light in darkness, supporting legibility when power fails or visibility is reduced. For best results, ensure the sign is exposed to sufficient ambient lighting under normal operating conditions.

Frame and material options
Photoluminescent signs can be supplied as signfaces only or fitted into aluminium frames. Single-sided and double-sided aluminium frames do not include chain, they are supplied with hooks only. Aluminium frames can be supplied in silver or black.
Chromadek is available on request, but it is not advisable for photoluminescent signage in outdoor applications. For best performance and service life, use materials and mounting options suited to the installation environment.
Frame products:
- Aluminium frames - Wall mounting (ALU001)
- Aluminium frames - Hanging frames (ALU002)
- Aluminium frames - Wall mount or hanging frames (ALU003)
Commonly used with
- SABS Exit (Green) photoluminescent safety sign. (E6A)
- SABS Exit (Red) photoluminescent safety sign (E6)
- SABS Telephone photoluminescent sign (E20)
- SABS First-Aid Equipment Photoluminescent (glow in the dark) sign (E7)
Standard sign alternative
If you do not require glow-in-the-dark performance, consider the standard version of this sign: Beware Of Electric Shock – SABS safety sign (WW7).
Compliance
This photoluminescent safety sign is manufactured in accordance with South African National Standards (SANS) requirements, including SANS 1186-5 for photoluminescent signs and SANS 1186-1:2022 for safety signs in South Africa. The design conventions align closely with ISO 7010 and ISO 3864-3 for standardised safety sign colours, shapes, and symbols.
Correct selection and placement should form part of your site safety planning and risk controls, ensuring signs remain visible and legible at the point where decisions are made.
