The Hairpin Bend (Left) road sign (W207) is a road layout warning sign used to alert drivers to an extremely sharp bend to the left ahead. It is used where a severe change in alignment requires significant speed reduction and increased caution.
Purpose and function
This sign warns drivers of a tight turning radius and limited sight distance. Hairpin bends present increased risk of loss of control, encroachment into opposing lanes, and heavy braking, especially in wet conditions or on steep gradients.
Typical applications
- Mountain passes and steep terrain routes
- Rural roads with sharp alignment changes
- High-risk curves where drivers may not anticipate the severity of the bend
Selection and placement guidance
- Install well in advance of the bend to allow safe braking
- Ensure clear visibility on approach and avoid placement behind roadside obstacles
- Use chevron alignment signs through the curve where required
Temporary alternative
This sign is also available as a temporary road sign for short-term traffic control:
