The Gate road sign (W314) is a W300 Series symbolic warning sign used to warn drivers that a gate may be present across the roadway ahead. It highlights a potential obstruction that may be open or closed depending on access control, livestock movement, or property operations.
Purpose and function
This sign provides advance warning so drivers can slow down and prepare to stop if the gate is closed, or if vehicles and people are entering or exiting through the gate area. It supports safer approach behaviour where visibility may be limited or where drivers would not expect a gate on a public or private route.
Typical applications
- Farm roads and agricultural access routes where gates control livestock movement
- Private roads, estates, and controlled-access routes with entry or exit gates
- Rural areas where gates are positioned near bends, dips, or limited sightlines
Commonly used with
- Wild Animals Ahead road sign (W313)
- Domestic animals (cattle) road sign (W310)
- Drift road sign (W350)
Selection and placement guidance
Install the sign far enough in advance for drivers to recognise the hazard and adjust speed safely. Where gates are frequently closed, consider repeat signage on long approaches or where sightlines are restricted by vegetation, terrain, or bends.
